Indoor Grassroots Information

WYSA Schedule

The Grassroots Schedule can be found on the WYSA Website by going to the Indoor Grassroots heading at the top of the site. Each of the 4 Divisions will be shown and clicking them will expand the division showing a list of teams as well as a link to all the Games scheduled. Clicking the Games button will take you to the full division schedule, and clicking your team's name will take you to your team's schedule.

Field Formation

The above image illustrates the WSF's Indoor Full Field divided into Quarter Fields by the 4 curtains. Each Quarter Field is further divided into a Field A and a Field B.

U8 and U9 teams will play matches on these smaller fields, while the U10s play matches on the entire Quarter Field.

Match Format

U8s and U9s will play two (2) back-to-back matches, each lasting 25 minutes. There will be no Half-time during these 25 minutes. After the first match, one team from Field A will move to Field B for the second match, which will start 5 minutes later.

U10s will play one (1) match with two equal halves lasting 25 minutes each.

Retreat Line

When the ball goes out of play for a goal kick, the attacking players must back up to the Retreat Line. The players of the team taking the goal kick can position themselves anywhere on the pitch and any player may take the goal kick. The opposing team retreats to the Retreat Line and may not cross until:

  1. The ball is touched by a player receiving the goal kick; or
  2. The ball leaves the field of play; or
  3. The ball is played directly into the middle third of the field.

For U8 and U9 matches, the retreat line is the Halfway Line. The Center Mark and the Dashed Mark outside Quarter Field Penalty Area can be used as guidelines to show where the Retreat Line is. For U10 matches, the retreat line is marked one third (1/3) of the way from the Goal Line. The Dashed Mark outside the Penalty Area can be used to reference the Retreat Line for U10 matches. Cones can be placed on the sides of the field to help identify the Retreat Line.

Game Leaders

Organizations will be responsible to provide Game Leaders on Match Days. They are also expected to provide coaches and even parent volunteers to assist with substitutions, hydration, equipment, and general player supervision so that the Game Leader can remain focused on facilitating the game itself. Game Leaders should apply the simplified Grassroots Laws of the Game while using common sense and limit unnecessary stoppages. They are there to guide rather than to penalize, to help keep the game moving, and to support both teams equally. More information on Game Leaders can be found on the Grassroots Programming page on the WYSA website.
